SMALL BOAT SAILING COURSELEVEL 1, Basic Skills 1 Designed
to introduce the beginner to sailing through theory and practical
sessions at the end of which an individual should be able to experience
sailing on small boats under coach guidance. Syllabus includes safety
awareness & equipment, wind awareness, some knots, basic heave to,
primary boat controls, reaching, capsize recovery drill, towing,
leaving and returning to the beach, some basic rules and some basic
terminology. LEVEL 2 - Basic Skills 2 This
consolidates basic skills 1 and should enable the successful candidate
the freedom to sail a small boat in sheltered conditions without coach
guidance. Syllabus includes rigging, more knots, more right of way
rules, sailing to windward, crew recovery drill and wind and tide
awareness.
LEVEL 3 – Better Sailing To
equip a sailor with enhanced skills & awareness of the surrounding
environment. The successful sailor will be able to manoeuvre more
efficiently on all points of sailing in stronger winds. This
course takes sailors beyond the elementary stage to more advanced boat
handling, sail and boat trim and general seamanship including roll
tacking & gybing. It is designed to help participants become
competent day sailors introducing spinnaker work and
anchoring. Participants will also learn basic pilotage and how to make
decisions taking them into sailing larger yachts. The course also forms
the basis for the development of assistant instructors, essential to
the continuation of quality sail training in the Northern Territory.
YACHTING AUSTRALIA YACHT CRUISING SCHEME INSHORE SKIPPER/COMPETENT CREW Skippers
and crew members of keel boats and large multihulls, or persons
interested in achieving these positions, should use this course to
either introduce themselves to sailing larger yachts, or to consolidate
existing skills. It should be noted that the course includes a
substantial navigation component.
COMPETENT CREW PRACTICALS For
those who wish to learn how to become useful crew members on trailer
sailers or keelboats. This is an opportunity to learn basic helming,
safety, ropework, sail handling & trimming, crew overboard
procedures. Suitable for “sailing partners” & those who do not want to get wet capsizing in the Small Boat Sailing Scheme. Competencies will be signed off in the log books as they are achieved.
NATIONAL POWER BOAT HANDLING CERTIFICATE
(vessels up to 8 metres in length) This
course is to provide participants with the opportunity to gain the
skills and knowledge to safely operate a small power boat and is
essential for those contemplating serious on the water training,
coaching, judging and race management.
MARINE RADIO OPERATORS CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY This
course is considered essential for any skippers or crew who sail on
radio equipped vessels. It is also desirable for persons manning the
Club’s rescue craft
